Planned £3bn prison refurbishment framework created to ease strain
A planned nationwide prison refurbishment programme totaling £3bn has been agreed to improve and upgrade over 100 of the country’s aging Victorian prisons, including internal renovation and structural upgrades.
There have been several stories recently in the press about the strain on the UK prison system, with the numbers of those incarcerated almost doubling over the last 20 years and currently sitting at roughly 77,000 inmates, which is close to capacity.
It is hoped the planned upgrades will go some way towards fixing the problem of lack of available prison places caused primarily by a lack of space, but made worse by decrepit buildings and interiors limiting what can be achieved.
The problem Her Majesty’s Prisons are facing at the moment is perhaps best highlighted by recent news articles suggesting a delay on tougher sentencing is being caused by an imposed leniency thanks to the lack of space.

On this project, we were using 25 to 30 subcontractors onsite. David Bailey was one of the few we had no problem with. Everything was delivered on time and the David Bailey staff onsite were very helpful.”
