Wexham Park Hospital Emergency Department | Case Study

About this project

The brand new emergency department at Wexham Park Hospital in Slough is now complete and was handed over to the Trust just before Christmas, ready for them to install their medical equipment and start using the new department. One of the main requirements for the fitted furniture for Wexham Park was our ability to produce formed stainless steel worktops.

The architect for the project was BDP and we were engaged by main contractor, Kier Construction.

Wexham Park Hospital Emergency Department

Our involvement in the project was a £300k contract to supply fitted healthcare furniture to the new Wexham Park Hospital emergency department. As part of the project we designed and manufactured bespoke healthcare furniture in our factory in Kent. We managed the installation of these units and worktops together with associated mirrors, grab rails, curtain tracks and blinds across 5 floors at the hospital.

The emergency department creates one of the best and most innovative units of its kind in the NHS. Sicker emergency patients will be treated in individual rooms and there will be extra assessment wards above for testing and treating patients who arrive via the emergency department (ED). This represents the biggest single investment at the Slough hospital since it was built more than half a century ago.

Colours & materials

The colour scheme was grey worktops with white doors. We also produced formed stainless steel worktops.

Improved experience and results for patients

Having the wards located in the same building as the Emergency Department will benefit patients and increase efficiency. Dedicated clinical teams attached to emergency and short-term medical care will be able to collaborate better and patients will have quick access to the right wards where the specialist clinicians and equipment will be on hand. Locating the assessment wards above the new ED will improve the experience and results for patients and will allow the hospital to provide a higher quality of care more efficiently.

Better safety, privacy and infection control

The 36 individual rooms in the Emergency Department will provide better safety, privacy and infection control. The design will be similar to the hospital’s other emergency department that was rebuilt at Frimley Park Hospital near Camberley in 2012. The floor above the emergency department will test and treat patients who can go home within 24 hours and the second floor will be for short stay assessment and treatment for up to 72 hours. Following this, patients will either be discharged or admitted to another part of the hospital. A third floor will house offices, staff rooms and plant equipment for the building.
