“We really appreciated DBFS’s ability to mobilise and go on and off the site to accommodate the sequence of works. There was lots of overlap and working alongside other contractors. DBFS were really positive and they worked well with our other contractors. They also took on additional work during the project at very short notice. For example, they provided us with grab rails, sinks, taps, curtain tracks and shower rails, which weren’t part of the original remit.”
We were selected by Bouygues UK, one of the country’s leading construction companies, to manufacture and install healthcare and bespoke furniture for the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) cancer and surgery hospital at Grafton Way, central London. We completed a full FF&E Group 1 and Group 2 fit-out for just under 800 rooms over 10 floors of this brand new facility. This included 2 floors of a private HCA Healthcare wing. The scale of this project in central London came with its own logistical challenges but with the advent of Covid-19 the challenges increased. We’re pleased that we worked through these to deliver the total installation.
“David Bailey were key to the successful delivery of the project and were able to mobilise very rapidly. Their relationship with us started with trust as their default position and they had a view on long term partnership right from the start. We would definitely work with them in the future.”
Jérémie Blot, Financial Control Manager, Bouygues UK.
NHS healthcare furniture
Having worked with the NHS for over 3 decades our healthline range meets the exacting hygiene, technical and durability standards required. The UCLH installation saw a healthcare furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E) package which contained clinical furniture, including floor and wall units, worktops, shelving, seating and a mixture of items from our Healthline range to complete the total project. The furniture was fitted to a wide range of patient and staff rooms, treatment rooms and communal/operational areas.
The furniture was completed to NHS requirements which included laminate surfaces and powder coated fittings with furniture finishes provided from our broad range of laminate colours.
In addition the total hospital project covered staff bases and reception desks throughout. All furniture was manufactured at our Kent factory with some units, such as reception desks, built and tailored to bespoke designs.

The new hospital consists of 9 clinical floors (plus 2 floors for plant), of which 3 are below ground. We provided furniture for all floors, including 2 for the HCA Healthcare private wing.
We fitted out 134 NHS and private patient ensuite bedrooms with furniture and accessories.
Our furniture and equipment was installed across almost 800 different rooms and areas over the 10 floors for the NHS and HCA.
We also installed 4,500 items of additional equipment provided by UCLH and HCA.
In total, we manufactured approximately 5,000 items of our healthcare collection furniture covering the complete range.
HCA Healthcare private wing furniture
As with the NHS we supplied and installed the same broad range of David Bailey Healthline and bespoke fitted furniture and fittings for HCA Healthcare across the 2 floor private hospital wing at UCLH.
HCA Healthcare requirements are as exacting as the NHS with worktops finished in Corian and facings utilising our wood grain effect patterned laminate with high polished stainless steel fittings.
Working closely with the HCA Healthcare architects and UCLH we were able to deliver the same high standards that we meet on a regular basis for the NHS.

Project challenges faced and overcome
“David Bailey weren’t asking for extra money every time there was a variation of the contract. It makes it much easier to manage things as a business if you’re not always looking at every penny.”

"DBFS were chosen for this flagship UCLH project by Bouygues UK based on our decades of experience in the healthcare market, demonstrating our knowledge and experience of projects completed nationwide with both the NHS and in private hospitals, and having the manufacturing facility and workforce that could achieve the tight timescales required. Working together as a team with Bouygues UK and supporting them to complete a successful project under unusual circumstances underlined the importance of driving towards a joint goal. A great team effort that has been highly rewarding to be involved in support of the Proton Beam Therapy installation,…

About the new University College London Hospital
With nine clinical floors, the new UCLH building covers 34,500 square feet and is home to one of Europe’s largest centres for the treatment of blood disorders. It has a hyper-modern surgical service, with eight theatres, a surgical ward and advanced proton beam therapy cancer treatment.
Much of the building is underground, with patient beds above and all arranged around a central courtyard building and full height day-lit atrium.
The UCLH Proton Beam Therapy Centre will be one of only two high energy PBT NHS centres in the UK, with the second installed at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester.
PBT is an advanced form of radiotherapy which delivers highly targeted doses of radiation to reduce side-effects and damage to surrounding tissue. The centre will be based in the lower ground floors of the state-of-the-art UCLH building, with the floors above ground housing Europe’s largest facility for the treatment of blood disorders.
The University College London Hospital NHS Foundations Trust (UCLH) proton beam therapy centre being delivered by Bouygues UK was shortlisted in the Public Sector Design Stage category of the BREEAM Awards 2019.
The BREEAM Awards recognise the achievement of those involved in the specification, design, construction and management of BREEAM certified buildings. UCLH has achieved the highest BREEAM interim design certification score for its rating scheme and achieved a near outstanding rating which is extremely rare for a hospital project and highly serviced building.
Bouygues UK designs and builds sustainable developments that enhance and transform communities for the better. Combining innovative design, expertise in construction and operational excellence, we offer a fully-integrated service.
Operating in the UK for over 20 years, Bouygues UK Construction has progressively grown its business in the sectors of building, infrastructure and industry.
