Gossoms End Medical Centre

About this project

David Bailey Furniture was appointed to deliver a focused yet high-impact upgrade at Gossoms End Medical Centre in Berkhamsted. Led by Rothschild House Group, the project, although relatively small, demanded the same level of precision and healthcare expertise as a far larger scheme – with a clear goal – to enhance one room with new storage that would streamline clinical workflows and meet the strict hygiene and compliance standards required in a modern medical environment.

As with all healthcare settings, the demands of hygiene, durability and clarity of use shaped every decision. David Bailey Furniture supplied and installed HTM71-compliant units, including a base unit fitted with plastic liners and clear polycarbonate trays. This created a modular storage system that allowed items to be easily located – a crucial factor in fast-paced clinical environments where efficiency saves valuable time.
To complement this, further base and wall units were fitted with two 18mm melamine shelves supported on bookcase strips. This provided increased shelf strength and the flexibility to reposition shelving at any height within the unit, allowing staff to adapt storage layouts to their changing needs.

Built-In features for improved hygiene

One of the priorities for the client was ensuring that the new fitted furniture supported strict hygiene standards. For this reason, the worktop was designed with a 50mm high integral upstand, reducing the number of joints and minimising the risk of bacteria or spilled fluids running behind the units. The wall units and an infill piece were manufactured with sloped tops, a detail that prevents dust accumulation, encourages regular cleaning and discourages the storage of miscellaneous items on top of units.
Additionally, the doors were finished with 2mm ABS edging, providing durability that can withstand the high frequency of use in a busy medical setting. This harder-wearing edge protection significantly reduces the risk of damage over time.

David Bailey Furniture also incorporated recessed flush-front handles, which improve safety by eliminating protrusions that staff could catch themselves on, an important consideration in tight clinical rooms where movement is constant. Unlike traditional D handles, recessed handles also remove the risk of bending or snapping, ensuring longevity and reliability. Their smooth surfaces also contain fewer crevices, making them easier to clean and more hygienic overall.

Meeting client objectives

The objective for Rothschild House Group was to enhance the clinical functionality of the room with additional storage that was hygienic, adaptable and aligned with healthcare regulations. The furniture supplied met HTM71 compliance requirements and provided the surgery’s staff with a more organised working environment where items can be stored logically and accessed quickly. The combination of modular tray systems, adjustable shelving and robust finishes created a practical, long-lasting solution designed specifically for healthcare use.
The completed installation has improved storage capacity, increased organisation and raised hygiene standards. Staff now benefit from a system that supports their daily tasks, reduces clutter and ensures essential items are always within reach. The modular design, durable components and healthcare-focused details also reflect David Bailey Furniture’s commitment to delivering high-quality solutions tailored to clinical environments.
Most importantly, this project, although compact, demonstrates how the right fitted furniture can have a meaningful impact on healthcare efficiency and cleanliness, helping surgeries like Gossoms End Medical Centre continue offering safe, organised and effective patient care.
