Headley Court DMRC | Healthcare furniture case study

About this project

The Queen and Prince Philip opened the new unit for injured soldiers at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) Headley Court in Surrey, which we helped refurbish with a bespoke nurse’s station. We worked with contractors Lakehouse on this project which was made possible with a £5 million grant from the Ministry of Defence.

Lieutenant Sarah Thompson RN, the OC of the Peter Long Unit, commented:

“The design of the nurse’s station allows good use of a wide corridor enabling staff to work in a semi-private environment on notes, whilst still keeping an eye on people coming into and out of the unit.”

Healthcare furniture at Headley Court

Headley Court in Surrey is the country’s largest rehabilitation centre for soldiers injured through conflict. The Peter Long Unit was built as an in-patient care facility to help patients with neurological conditions.

Further comments by Lieutenant Thompson:

  1. “The computer screens can now be angled to prevent wheelchair users seeing what is on the screen when talking to staff. As such the medical-in-confidence element of our work is now assured.”
  2. “The nurses’ station is well liked; it is easy to keep clean with wipes; and a gap in the back of the desk makes it possible for a wheelchair to fit under it, which makes a real difference for staff and patient communication. As the desk is fixed to the floor there is no problem with movement when fast moving patients knock into the desk and its rounded edges help prevent injuries.”

“All-round the desk is modern, professional and a hit with everyone using it.”
