Gossoms End Medical Centre

About this project

David Bailey Furniture Systems was chosen to deliver specialist fitted furniture for the new CAMHS Seastone facility in Bournemouth, a purpose-built mental health unit designed to support children and young people requiring intensive care.

Working alongside Kier Construction and Medical Architecture, the project required a careful balance between safety, durability and the need to create a calm, welcoming environment for patients.

Located on Alumhurst Road in Bournemouth, the new-build facility was developed to provide a secure and supportive setting for young patients. David Bailey Furniture was responsible for the supply and installation of specialist fitted furniture across a range of areas, including patient bedrooms, family spaces and kitchens and staff-only environments, including offices, reception areas and utility rooms.

Works were delivered between January and May 2026 through a structured, phased programme of weekly deliveries, ensuring continuous installation and seamless coordination with the wider build programme.

Designing for Safety Without Compromise

The core objective for the project was to create an environment that felt comfortable and non-institutional, while meeting the highest standards of patient safety. Achieving this required every element of the furniture to be carefully designed with both wellbeing and risk reduction in mind.

All furniture installed within patient areas was therefore specified to be ligature-resistant and robust enough to withstand potential impacts during mental health episodes, incorporating features such as fixed shelving and anti-ligature handles throughout.

Particular attention was also given to eliminating risk points. Wardrobe units were manufactured without doors to remove opportunities for self-harm, while bespoke TV units were developed using flush fixings and carefully considered ironmongery to minimise potential hazards.

Delivering Practical and Emotional Value

As a result, the completed facility now provides a safe, functional and thoughtfully designed environment for both patients and staff.

For patients, the use of decorative finishes and carefully designed furniture has helped to create a more comfortable and less clinical atmosphere, an important factor in supporting wellbeing and recovery.

For staff, the installation offers reassurance that every room has been designed with safety at its core, reducing risk and supporting the delivery of care.

The CAMHS Seastone project demonstrates the importance of combining technical expertise with an understanding of the environments in which fitted furniture will be used. It shows that in mental health settings, design is not just about appearance, it is about creating spaces that actively support safety, dignity and rehabilitation.

Through careful planning, specialist manufacturing and close collaboration with the wider project team, David Bailey Furniture Systems was able to deliver a solution that met those demands in full.
