Hospice refurbishments boosted by £60m government investment

The Department of Health has announced 176 hospices across the country will benefit from a £60m money-pot aimed at delivering better environments in which end of life care can be given.

Studies have shown comfort is a huge factor in people choosing to die at home, but often due to medical circumstances this is, regrettably, not suitable for many patients. Levels of hospice refurbishment are expected to rise after the funds are made available, increasing comfort levels for those receiving palliative care.

Transforming hospices with sterile, hospital-like atmospheres into something altogether more soothing will be of great benefit to patients who wish to spend their remaining time with family in a homely environment.

The new fund will also benefit those families who do not wish for their last memories of loved ones to be plagued by off-white walls and sanitary furnishings; something often overlooked when considering end of life care.

The new funding boost means that hospice furniture and fixtures, whilst remaining fit for medical purpose, have licence to take on new characteristics not usually associated with these types of furnishings.
