Despite 2020 being driven by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, interior design trends are continuing to change through styling, colours, and furniture choices. In many healthcare facilities, the clinical look is being disregarded and is being replaced by a contemporary and comfortable look. With many examples of this already in the USA, the UK is quickly taking note. Here are some healthcare interior design trends that are proving to be popular in 2020:
Wayfinding works by using patterns, colours, flooring designs and furniture colours to act as a map, and is now becoming common in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. As they tend to have a multitude of different buildings, wayfinding can act as a guide throughout the facility. It goes without saying that any flooring being used for wayfinding must still be durable and easy to clean despite their colourful and aesthetically pleasing designs.
More than ever, we are seeing art being used throughout healthcare facilities to evoke a comfortable and positive environment. Some facilities may choose a simple addition of a painting. Others, however, have been known to design an entire space around a piece of artwork, for example, a sculpture or a painting. The idea of this is to help patients feel at ease and more at home, which is especially important if they are to be there for a long period of time.
Although this is incorporated in multiple industries, it is arguably the most important in healthcare facilities. Resimercial design involves using traditional elements of a home and using these to create a more welcoming environment for patients. It’s not a secret that visiting a hospital can cause high levels of anxiety, and a resimercial design can be a great way to alleviate this.
In the past, a hospital waiting area has not been a priority for architects, but the industry is now beginning to take them into account. After all, people spend long periods of time in waiting areas, which can often be a very stressful time. Waiting areas are now being designed to be inviting and warm, and often easily changed around.
