David Bailey wins contract for new cancer centre at Guy’s Hospital

David Bailey Furniture Systems is pleased to announce it has recently been awarded the contract for the refurbishment of a brand new, state-of-the-art cancer centre at Guy’s Hospital in London.

The new medical centre will be a hub for south east London, providing specialist cancer services, training, development and research. Patients and the local community were encouraged to take an active role in the design of the building, taking each aspect into consideration from the way that care is organised to supporting world class research into new treatments.

Working alongside contractors Laing O’Rourke, David Bailey Furniture Systems will manufacture and install fitted hospital furniture from its Healthline range to the value of £330,000. The work is due to start in June 2015, with a completion date of March 2016. The Cancer Centre will open to the public in autumn 2016.

David Bailey Furniture Systems regularly supplies fixtures, fittings and equipment for healthcare contracts to complement its range of hospital storage units and worktops, including: coat hooks, curtain tracks, drugs and medicine cabinets, grab rails, mirrors, noticeboards, whiteboards.

Ryan Giles at Laing O’Rourke explained the project in more detail.

“The Cancer Centre at Guy’s Hospital involved the demolition of two existing two-storey buildings to make way for a fourteen-storey cancer treatment centre. The levels of the building are split up into villages which cover the main stages of cancer treatment. Welcome Village (ground floor – level 1), Radiotherapy Village (Levels 2 – 4), Outpatients Village (Levels 5 – 6), Chemotherapy Village and King’s College London Research (Levels 7 – 9) and Private Patients Unit (Levels 10 – 13). Treatment and research will both be based in the building. By bringing together researchers and clinicians, the Trust aims to accelerate their drive to develop new treatments, enhance the patient experience and improve outcomes for cancer patients.”

Trevor Gillman, Managing Director of David Bailey Furniture Systems, said: “We have been manufacturing furniture specifically for the healthcare industry for 33 years now and we pride ourselves on the service we provide and the quality of our fitted storage solutions.  We are very excited to be part of such a ground-breaking project for cancer treatment in our capital city and we look forward to working together with internationally renowned construction company Laing O’Rourke.”
